Arghillà celebrates the International Day of Peace
This year’s International Day of Peace, under the theme “Investing in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” highlights the role that each of us can play in building peace. Around the world, volunteers, advocates, civil society representatives, peacekeepers and peacemakers are helping to bridge divides, strengthen communities and promote dialogue. Peace is built through everyday engagement in communities, neighbourhoods and schools, by creating inclusive spaces, protecting human rights and the dignity of every person, and making sure that every voice can be heard.
To mark the Day, the neighbourhood of Arghillà in Reggio Calabria will host a relay bringing together families, educators, associations and representatives of local institutions.
A torch, symbolising hope, participation and community, will be passed from hand to hand by children and other participants, accompanying them along a route designed to strengthen connections between people and across the community.
Along the way, games, workshops and other participatory activities will explore the values associated with peace: solidarity, respect, trust, inclusion, care, friendship, responsibility and cooperation.
Each stop will offer an opportunity to meet and share. From hand to hand and from one part of Arghillà to another, the torch will trace a single route through the neighbourhood, making visible the connections between people.
At the final gathering, all participants will come together in one place, where the different torches and the values encountered along the way will become part of a shared experience: a community building a path towards peace.
In a world where war and inequality shape the daily lives of millions of people, and where shared responses to common challenges remain difficult to achieve, the torch carried through Arghillà joins, symbolically, those carried by communities everywhere working towards social justice, dialogue and solidarity. It is through the commitment and participation of citizens, volunteers, educators, associations and communities that peace moves from an aspiration to something we build and practise every day.
The initiative is organized by Centro Sportivo Italiano – Reggio Calabria Committee, in cooperation with the City of Reggio Calabria, Medici del Mondo, Sinergie Cooperativa Sociale, Ecolandia – Parco Ludico Tecnologico Ambientale, Fata Morgana Comunità and the National Project for the Inclusion and Integration of Roma, Sinti and Caminanti Children, with the support of UNICRI.
